Howl stops Sophie on her way to see her sister Sophie comes to Howl's castle for help Martha introduces Howl as her boyfriend Howl buys a hat from Sophie at. Howl is said to steal souls of the most beautiful girls, which worries Sophie. While in the castle she meets Calcifer a fire demon, and she learns of the contract.
I'm not going to starve again outside. The bakery will be full of people soon, and I don't want to fly again to visit my own sister!
The fire demon seemed to like it, so Markl gave another apple to him. Now I know why they don't have a trash can in the kitchen. Howl changed the color of the door switch so they could go to Market Chipping. Sophie still found unusual the fact that the castle door was located exactly where her family's old hat shop used to be.
Now the store was only a normal house, looking from the outside. The street was quite calm at that time. There were a few children with their mothers, playing. Young men with plain clothes were chatting near the hat shop and some dogs were chasing a small, black cat. Sophie opened her blue umbrella. Howl seemed to not care about the sun and followed her. As they approached the Cesary's bakery, they relieved that there weren't lots of people trying to buy cakes just to see Lettie.
However, it seemed that Prince Justin wasn't there. Lettie, who was taking care of a box full of creamy strawberry cakes, was really anxious to see Sophie. She hadn't seen her for a long time, and since the day she had heard that Sophie was seen with that mysterious wizard, she was afraid that it could be Howl. Although she knew that the King trusted him, most people in Market Chipping simply refused to believe that a wizard could be a good person.
She had never seen Wizard Howl before, but everyone knew that he was a young, tall man, with shoulder length straight hair and used to wear earrings. She left the box she was carrying on the floor and run to outside.
There she was, her dear sister Sophie. She noticed that she seemed to be happier now, but she also noticed other strange things. She noticed that Sophie's hair was short and silver now. It suited her, Lettie thought, although silver was a very unusual color for hair. But then she froze when she saw who was the handsome man that came with Sophie. It was really beautiful young man with green eyes.

His shoulder length hair was straight and black. He was quite tall, specially now that he was wearing boots. But Lettie noticed that he was wearing green earrings, and that really caught her attention. Sophie was too shocked to do something, and Howl was too dizzy with the sudden attack to avoid the others. But he is a kindhearted person, he is not bad! I think I won't eat pies and cakes for a long time Lettie stopped her attack. Sophie flees the Royal City on a plane that Howl stole.
Howl stays behind as a decoy so Sophie can safely get away. Sophie crashes into the castle, and she dreams that Howl is consumed by his demon.
How do Howl and Sophie first meet in Howl's Moving Castle? ( people answered this)
She admits that she loves him in her dream, where he roars that it's too late. Howl arrives the next morning, and moves the castle again. The castle transforms into Sophie's hat shop, along with a new portal, that leads to a beautiful field of flowers. Sophie becomes young again, and she asks Howl if he's leaving her. He doesn't answer, to which she responds, "Please, Howl, I know I can be of help to you. Even though I'm not pretty, and all I'm good at is cleaning. Howl destroys the engine, and saves Sophie.
Sophie turns the Hat Shop into a flower shop, and her mother visits her. Her mother secretly leaves a little spy blob behind, and the Witch throws it in Calcifer's mouth. He weakens, and is unable to defend the castle when the country is thrust into war.
Sophie runs outside, fully young as she has unknowingly broke her own curse, and watches as Howl saves the shop from a falling bomb.
He emerges from the wreckage unscathed, and the two embrace. Howl heals Calcifer, and Sophie begs him not to go out into the war again. He responds, "Sorry, I've had enough of running away, Sophie. Now I've got something to protect. The castle curmbles, and Sophie places him back in the ruined grate.
Despite Sophie's curse being lifted, her hair remains silver, much unlike the book, where Sophie's hair turns red. She gives Calcifer her hair, and he grows strong enough to move the castle to find Howl and tell him that they are safe.
Meanwhile, the Witch of the Waste realizes that Calcifer holds Howl's heart, and she plucks him from the hearth. She begins to burn, and Sophie throws a bucket of water on her. Calcifer goes out, causing the castle to fall apart. Sophie falls over a cliff, along with Heen. The ring that Howl gave her glows blue, and leads to the portal from the castle.
She opens it up, and enters the black void that only Howl has been in. She ends up in the past, and witnesses Howl as a child. Stars are falling from the sky, and she runs out to stop him from making a pact with Calcifer. However, Howl swallows the star before Sophie can reach him, and Calcifer is born, with Howl's small heart beating within. Sophie calls out to him, telling him to find her in the future.

Sophie just before she puts Howl's heart back and frees Calcifer She pleads with the Witch to give her Calcifer, and when she does, Sophie pushes him into Howl's chest. Calcifer flies out, once more a star, and flies away. The remains of the castle break apart once Calcifer leaves, and they shot down a hill towards a cliff, but are saved by Turnip Head, who loses his pole in the process. Sophie kisses Turnip Head, who turns into the missing prince. At that moment, Howl awakes, complaining about a weight on his chest.
Sophie then replies, "A heart's a heavy burden. Sophie, now full of confidence, tackles him and agrees. You should go home anyway and tell your king to stop this dumb war.
After the prince leaves, Calcifer returns, deciding to stay with the curse-free Sophie and Howl. The movie ends with the castle flying through the sky.
In the book of Howl's Moving Castle, Howl has "marble like" green eyes and it is unclear what his natural hair colour is. According to Calcifer, Howl is "very vain, for a plain looking man with mud-colored hair. Michael and Calcifer insist that the day Howl forgets to spend less than an hour in the bathroom is the day he is truly in love, a prediction which later turns out to be true. Howl wears flamboyant and fancy suits, claiming to Michael that "No one's going to employ a wizard if he looks like he can't make money at the trade" although Sophie voices suspicions that really, he just likes clothes.
The suit he wears most often is silver and blue though he later changes to his more favoured grey and scarlet one, later disguised as a black suit, when Howl goes into mourning for his tutor, Mrs Pentstemmon.
Originally, it was just flashy, until Sophie accidentally darned magic into the seams by talking life into it, saying "[the suit is] Howl with black hair built to pull in the girls.
At the beginning of the book it is blonde, then a pinkish red color this happened by accident, Sophie moved around his potions in the bathroom and finally bluish-black, a color most people agree looks best on him, as it goes with his "glass green eyes". When Howl gets his heart back, his eyes become much less marble-like and more real looking. Howl has a kind, generous personality.
He allowed Michael and Sophie to live with him, and is very forgiving of their mistakes. He also gave Calcifer his heart when Calcifer was a dying falling star. His good traits, however, are masked by his more negative traits, as well as deliberate "blackening of his name", so very few people know of them.
He hates to quarrel, and will "slither out" of situations he doesn't want to be in. He hates to be pinned down to anything, and is quite cowardly. In addition to this, Howl has a somewhat child-like attitude, begging for attention and even throwing a tantrum. Despite his attention-seeking, self-absorbed nature, he's quite kind - or rather, is not wicked; "I'm too patient and too polite," as he put it. The only way he can make himself do something brave is to tell himself he is running away.
He also lies a lot, and likes to tease Sophie, though subtly. A good example of this is when he is pretending to be in love with Lettie to get information on Sophie, and he constantly goes on about her to make Sophie feel jealous. Howl's worst, or at least most troublesome trait, is his courting. He cannot rest until he has made a girl love him and becomes quite insensible, but once she loves him he swiftly forgets her. This practice is where Howl got his reputation for eating hearts, as that is what rejected girls' angry aunts call it when they come looking for Howl.
This practice also is why the Witch of the Waste cursed Howl, as she was jilted by him as well. Howl is very insensible with money, overcharging the rich and undercharging the poor, as well as spending too much too often. It is suspected that, when Howl gave Calcifer his heart, he lost some of his humanity.
This is suggested by the progression of the Witch of the Waste, who had her fire demon for much longer than Howl. It is also suggested by Madam Pentstemmon, when she tells Sophie that Howl is "going to the bad.
In the movie, he is able to transform in to a large beast with black feathers and seemly various stages of transformation. He uses this power to fly to the battlefield and fight as well as to escape from enemies.
At one point in the movie, he 'zooms in', on a battleship when him and Sophie are in his garden, he passes walkways, slips past several henchmen, and goes to the heart of the airship where he unplugs several cables that stop all but one wing from working. But this magic seems to transform him into the beast: What did you do?
